New Forest Barn conversion
BRIEF
Matching lifestyle and architecture
The clients approached us with a vision of transforming their current kitchen space, which was dark, small in size and had poor access to their existing home’s layout into a larger, contemporary and light-filled family kitchen. They wanted a kitchen with quality cabinetry, a large island, energy-efficient appliances, ample storage, seating and interior features that would make the room a beautiful, yet functional hub for their whole family.
CHALLENGE
Answering the brief
Jaye began our unique client exploration process by getting to know the family, their interior preferences, wish list, materials they felt inspired by and how they wanted to live and feel in their finished space.
As the clients wanted their new kitchen to serve as the hub of their home and a multi-functional space, Jaye included dedicated areas to facilitate food preparation, coffee and tea making, cooking, dining, family gatherings, entertaining and moments of relaxation.
The design incorporates sophisticated cabinetry with plenty of storage for crockery, larder items and fresh ingredients along with ample storage for their children’s toys.
Jaye considered including two islands to increase flow but later decided that one large island would be the preferred option as it would allow the clients to have easy movement and access to all the sustainably conscious integrated appliances the client wanted when cooking on one side and comfortable seating on the opposite side.
To pay homage to the age of the property Jaye chose a handleless timber effect laminate door in Cottage Oak on the busy side of the kitchen for easy cleaning and a fuss-free feel and contrasted it with a bronze-handled Umbra-toned lacquered sshaker door at the breakfast bar and drinks section for a more opulent edge. The contrasting Umbra silk tone offers depth and opulence without darkening the space, due to the vastness of the light, veined stone worktops and statement splashback
The cabinetry was contrasted with 12mm Neolith Abu Dhabi for the worktops and splashback to reflect a subtle delicate texture with its soft, golden veining and flecks of flinty grey that also blend beautifully with the stone tiled floor. The worktop was an early challenge to feature a seamless join so, the veining was book-matched to look as though it was one large piece.
To ensure the kitchen space reflected luxury, careful consideration of the final interior design finishes was important. A buff limewash wall colour complements the organic, warm feel and works perfectly with the cabinetry and oak beams in the kitchen.
OUTCOME
Relaxing family space
The result is a luxury family kitchen that seamlessly merges contemporary elegance with the rustic charm of the barn. It now offers a welcoming well-zoned space where the family can cook, dine at the large round table next to the dual-sided fireplace, unwind, and connect with the local area’s breathtaking beauty. High-quality, yet value-for-money interior design finishes and lighting choices, such as the steamed wood statement pendant over the dining table were also recommended by Jaye to complete the look.
The Myers Touch felt very fresh and come up with original ideas that reflect the individuals lifestyles and interests. I instantly knew when I met Jaye she was going to be a good person to work with, she just had the air of calm and relax.
