BRIEF

Function and flow

This client came looking for the Wow factor, and a company that would work with them on a long and detailed design journey. Over the course of several months the kitchen, dining and drinks reception areas emerged through a progressive look at flow, proportion, symmetry, ergonomics, functionality, style, presence and impact. The client was heavily involved in all aspects of the project and the final outcome is very much the expression of this collaborative approach.

CHALLENGE

Separation of 3 distinctive areas

The design of this room led to the careful separation of three distinctive areas; the kitchen; the drinks area and the dining-room. Separating the spaces, a hand-finished floor to ceiling fireplace provides dining privacy, whilst an underground spiral wine cellar marks the transition from kitchen to the drinks bar.

In the kitchen zone, a vast island anchors the space and showcases cutting edge stone technology. To avoid heaviness the stone is both suspended and cantilevered, creating an eye-catching centrepiece, whilst, behind the doors, storage of each piece of crockery and cutlery has been considered for the highest practical effect.

Pocket doors open to reveal a walk-in larder flanked with a combination of open shelving and drawers. This is also a fabulous place to set out plated food before guests arrive so that the main kitchen retains a clutter-free and hygienic environment.

With 4 Gaggenau refrigeration, 4 ovens, 3 warming drawers and a vacuum drawer, this kitchen is a dream for any cook. And with such a large galley there is plenty of room to prepare food without interruption- or spread out a buffet for those party occasions

The drinks bar is a work of art in its own right. With two double pocket doors it can be hidden away during the day time, or opened up as required to reveal the striking collection of Gins, nestled on the shelves of a bespoke bronze and glass display and flanked either side by two tall Gaggenau wine fridges. Underneath the glasses are neatly arranged in elegant bronze-gold cabinetry whether in use or not, this arrangement is a delight to behold.

The dining room shares the same elegant metallic cabinetry, this time recessed into the wall and raised to side-board height. A large mirror frames the wall above, absorbing the views of the garden, and an integrated Kaelo wine-cooler completes the touch of luxury, providing non-drip chilled wine from side-board to table.

OUTCOME

Relaxed and calming living

This wonderful space is just as the client had hoped; full of light, commanding of presence and bursting with meticulous detail. It is the ideal space for both relaxed family togetherness and hosted parties. The room carries an air of spaciousness despite containing an abundance of storage and appliances and the huge stone island is an instant ‘Wow’ when you walk into the room.

It is a beautiful space to be in. My friends tell me they enjoy coming around as they find it a very calming space; I didn’t appreciate this space could feel like that to others. We love it as it’s our home and our design choice but, it also feels really nice to be able to share the space with friends and family. Our three daughters particularly love coming home too which is always nice for us.
