Contemporary Shaker Kitchen
BRIEF
Improving flow and light
The owners of this period flint and brick home in the Hampshire market town of Winchester wanted to change the internal layout to improve the flow and the light. This involved moving and recreating the kitchen to suit modern family life for them and their two children.
They asked us to design a contemporary family kitchen-dining space with a classic edge and desired a place for everything so the space could remain uncluttered and functional. The design also had to complement the rest of the house and make the most of their wonderful views out to the garden.
CHALLENGE
Overcoming the issues
Keith used a complementary mix of classic and contemporary cabinetry and the lofty period ceilings allowed us to include high-level glass cabinets for storage, reached by a ladder. Marble-effect worktops and splashbacks provide a classic look, whilst the flat, sleek SieMatic SLX cabinetry with smoked oak veneer finish and the large central island contrast with a modern edge.
To provide subtle, contrasting finishing touches to the space, Keith added a dresser unit to cover an old doorway. Soft, contemporary Shaker style furniture is used with open shelving that fits neatly into the dresser walls. Special decorative items can be housed in the glass display units high in the ceiling.
OUTCOME
Cohesive transitional space
A contemporary shaker kitchen with clever design tricks that include the angled handle profile of the cupboards give the illusion of the worktop floating on top of the central island, with a similar illusion created by the set-back plinths below. The large island is the key focal area with the front housing the bin, sink, dishwasher and drawers. The other side contains storage and the back has space for bar stool seating. The homeowners also wanted a large dining table, which we designed using a seamless, 12mm Dekton worktop on top of a custom-made steel frame that cohesively brings together the kitchen, dining and entertaining scheme.
"It was really important to find the right designer who understood what we were trying to achieve. Keith uses a holistic design approach and he dug deeply into how we wanted to interact as a family in the space. We're delighted with the delicate blending of traditional and modern, and the amount of light and space in the room. It now feels welcoming and homely but also modern and stylish."
